How it Started
James Marshall was just building a sawmill in the American River for the man that had hired him when he saw something glinting out of the corner of his eye. After picking up the yellow pea sized object, which weighed much more than it looked, only one question flashed in his mind: Have I just started a gold rush?
Not being an argonaut, Marshall went to a professional and confirmed that he truly had found what the forty-niners would call color. Marshall planned to keep the discovery of the gold quiet, so he only told only his boss, John Sutter. Sutter couldn't help but brag about it, so the word got out and people were left to believe it or not. This was finally ceased when President Polk had it confirmed in a speech. By then, people all over the world were busy planning the trip and buying supplies. The California Gold Rush had begun, and only chaos would follow.
